VE-Net - The Danish Renewable Energy Network Focused at the Danish Energy System

VE-Net is a renewable energy network funded by the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and managed by the Danish Technological Institute in co-operation with the Danish Energy Industries Federation. The aim of VE-Net is to facilitate collaboration between research establishments, industrial organisations and companies. Through these initiatives, VE-Net supports innovation in the energy field and contributes to improve the use of energy resources, increased energy efficiency, application and implementation of renewable energy in the Danish energy system.

BølgenThe consortium of VE-Net includes companies and research establishments focusing on renewable energy technologies in the areas of manufacturing, application and integration of these technologies. VE-Net is the only existing network where participants from all energy fields have the opportunity to meet to discuss joint initiatives. By acting as a catalyst in the process, VE-Net is able to co-ordinate and combine efforts to promote renewable energy initiatives. VE-Net also works on creating more visibility within the Danish energy sector and energy research in an international aspect.

Havalge også kaldet søsalatOne of the results of the network is the research project entitled “Energy production from marine biomass”. In this project, it was decided to test whether the fast-growing alga - sea lettuce - can become an important fuel in the future power plants and a raw material in the production of bio-ethanol for cars. Researchers from the National Environmental Research Institute at the University of Aarhus, Risø and the Danish Technological Institute in collaboration with DONG Energy have received funding from Energinet.dk to explore how to grow and harvest algae and via a fermentation process to produce bio-ethanol and biogas - or solid fuels. The aim of the project is to determine whether it is feasible and financially viable to exploit the alternative biomass potential.

EnergyMap.dkAnother major project is the demonstration project entitled EnergyMap. The EnergyMap.dk project is a Google-Earth based portal and a virtual map which will make current and future Danish energy research more visible through demonstration and development projects. Via its initiative and involvement in EnergyMap.dk and the transfer of the portal in 2008 to the Danish Climate Consortium, VE-Net has created a unique display window for Danish innovative climate and energy technology solutions up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009. The portal is now fully active, see www.energymap.dk.
