Energy Efficiency Laboratory - Professional and commercial refrigerator and freezer appliances

The requirements of professional and commercial refrigerator and freezer appliances are tightening as the need for more energy effective appliances increases. For example, the energy consumption of professional refrigerated storage cabinets accounts for a significant share of the total electricity demand in the EU, and the scope for reducing energy consumption is significant.

Danish Technological Institute is accredited to test professional and commercial refrigeration and freezer appliances according to the following test standard:

  • EN/ISO 23953
  • EN 16825

Professional and commercial refrigerator and freezer appliances cover all types of storage and display cabinets of various shapes and sizes and with multiple functions, e.g. glass door bottle coolers, beer coolers, wine coolers, minibars for hotel rooms, ice cream cabinets, open air bottle coolers with air curtain, professional wine coolers as well as professional food service coolers and freezers for professional kitchens, and much more.

We offer accredited testing of all types of refrigerator and freezer cabinets and appliances as well as evaluation and development of design and technology.

Moreover, we offer consultancy on ecodesign and energy labelling requirements as well as the choice of refrigerant, for example with regards to information about the properties of the individual refrigerants, including their advantages and disadvantages.

How can Danish Technological Institute help you?

Ecodesign and energy labelling requirements

Professional refrigerated storage cabinets are soon subject to the ecodesign and energy labelling requirements, and studies made by the European Commission show that commercial refrigerated display cabinets are also eligible for ecodesign and energy labelling requirements. Therefore, professional and commercial refrigerated cabinets, e.g. professional kitchen cabinets, bottle coolers, ice cream freezers and plug-in supermarket cabinets, are soon to be covered by the Ecodesign Directive.

This means that you will be able to add energy parameters to your competitive factors which opens up for new opportunities, not only in terms of product differentiation, you get to promote your product in terms of its energy effectivity, but also in terms of product development.

We offer testing, evaluation and development of your cabinets and appliances according to the ecodesign and energy labelling requirements. Through test and development, we can assist you in improving your appliances and making them ready for the market.

In the Energy Efficiency Laboratory, we are able to test e.g. the storage temperature and level of energy consumption under controlled test conditions, similar to the actual conditions of a given product. By improving the design of your appliances, you can meet the ecodesign and energy labelling requirements, reduce environmental impacts and achieve energy savings. Often, the energy consumption can be reduced with more than 50 %.

Our laboratories also play a significant role in connection with our R&D projects, where we among other things focus on developing new design and technology.

Natural refrigerants

To decrease the greenhouse effect and ozone depletion caused by refrigerant emissions, regulations and requirements (2007) concerning the use of refrigerants with greenhouse effect and/or ozone depletion potential have been introduced. Examples of such refrigerants are HFC refrigerants, R134a, R404a and R410a etc., and HCFC refrigerants, R12, R22 and R502 etc. These types of refrigerants are often used in professional and commercial refrigerated cabinets.

The alternative to these refrigerants is natural refrigerants, e.g. R290, R600a, R717, and R744. These refrigerants are environmentally friendly and they are not ozone depleting or cause greenhouse effect.

Case - Impulse Sales Cooler

Danish Technological Institute hasELFORSK prisen 2011 - Prisoverrækkelse participated in a R&D project focusing on the development of a new energy efficient impulse sales cooler which resulted in Danish Technological Institute winning the Danish ELFORSK Award in 2011.

The objective of the project was to reduce energy consumption and to use natural refrigerants in impulse sales coolers in kiosks, gas stations and supermarkets.

The impulse sales cooler developed in the project uses natural refrigerants and uses nearly half as much electrical power as traditional impulse sales coolers. Moreover, most impulse coolers are open, which results in a large consumption of energy, and the refrigeration systems are often quite inefficient. The new impulse sales cooler only uses 2.2 kWh per day compared to the 4.15 kWh per day of traditional impulse sales coolers.

You can read more about the project and the results in the final report of the project:
