Project - High-temperature heat pumps

The project is finalised.

Industrial use of low-temperature waste heat by means of new high-temperature heat pumps

Project start 2010. Expected completion June 2013.

Industry discharges large amounts of waste heat with a relatively low temperature, e.g. from drying and cleaning processes. Annually, 5000 TJ could theoretically be recovered from industrial waste heat by means of heat pumps. Until recently, it has not been possible to recover the waste heat as existing heat pumps have not been able to yield a sufficiently high discharge temperature so the energy can be used in industrial processes.

By means of a number of new heat pump technologies, it is now possible to produce sufficiently high temperatures that are interesting in industrial processes.

The new technologies are e.g.:

  • CO2 as refrigerant
  • Water as refrigerant
  • Hybrid process with water-/ammonia mixtures
  • Ammonia compressor for high pressure

Objectives
The objective of the project is to demonstrate the use of high-temperature heat pumps in industry (heat rating >500kW). The new heat pumps can supply water of 80-150 degrees C, which makes it possible to use low-temperature waste heat in new, interesting ways in industrial processes.

Participants

  • Grontmij Carl Bro
  • IM Aarhus A/S
  • SPX Anhydro
  • Arla Foods a.m.b.a.
  • Thise Mejeri (Danish Dairy)
  • Aarhus Slaughterhouse Ltd.

Activities

In the course of the project, the energy flows in 3-4 companies will be analysed to illustrate the possibility of using heat pumps. A test company will be selected where a heat pump will be installed. Measurements of the energy consumption before and after installation of the heat pump will then give an impression of the obtained savings during day-to-day operations.
