Corrosion on the inside
A measure of corrosion rate by weight loss indicates the level of mass lost from e.g. pipe walls. However, such data do not contain information on whether or not the corrosion is localized and therefore what the risk of through wall penetration may be.

CorrosionThus, it is essential that both general and localized corrosion is handled to ensure the integrity of the facility. Initiation of corrosion mitigation and prevention further demand a thorough understanding of the corrosion processes. Hence, it is often necessary to cover material analyses with both chemical and microbiological investigations before such understanding can be reached.
