Project - Effortless maintenance of surfaces

Clean Catalytic Surfaces

Project start October 2007. Expected completion September 2010.

The project is completed 31st March 2011.

Lamps and extraction units that clean smears and micro-organisms themselves is science-fiction no more, and will soon become a reality. In the summer of 2007, the Danish Technological Institute, along with eight other partners, received the means to develop and promote the use of self-cleaning surfaces in Danish high-end industrial production.

The breakdown of fatty substances, simpler washing procedures and longer life span of products; these are the focus areas for the work in the new innovation consortium ´Clean Catalytic Surfaces`.

The consortium represents four very different industrial segments, including hospital and care sectors, air and water treatment, surfaces for design products as well as development of new types of road signs and paint. The idea is to use light sensitive nano catalytic material to achieve an environmentally correct and effective cleaning technology, resulting in longer life span and less maintenance of the products. Experience from the best of catalytic research combines the most recent knowledge bases within photo catalytic areas.

Project Objectives


  • We expect to develop prototypes of self-cleaning paint, road signs, lamps, hospital equipment and extraction units.


  • Develop photo catalytic material active in light
  • Develop adhesives to bind the self-clean particles to a surface area


  • Develop self-cleaning surfaces using PVD-processes, sol-gel methods, electro chemical processes and paints.
  • Establish measurement methods for documentation of the self-clean effect.
