Project - Waste to value

Project start January 2007.

The project was completed in February 2011.

European politicians have decided that minimum 5.75% of the energy consumption for transport should be based on biofuel in 2010. This involves obviously great export opportunities for Danish industry within new advanced second-generation technologies for the production of biofuel from waste products. 50% of Danish fuel consumption for transport is based on diesel, and this amount is increasing. However, Danish biodiesel research is insufficient even though it is strongly inquired for by the Danish industry.

This innovation consortium will contribute to remedy this by focusing on development, production, storage, distribution and application of biodiesel.

Project Objective
The purpose of the innovation consortium is to develop second-generation technologies for the production of biodiesel. This will take place through research and development demonstrated by selected types of waste used as basic material:

  • Industrial sewage
  • Animal fat and meat-and-bone meal.

The produced biodiesel and the developed processes and technologies should preferably meet the following requirements:

  • The production processes should be optimized to make the product become competitive within energy use and fuel price
  • The amount of byproducts and residues which are difficult to handle should be minimized
  • A good fuel quality should optimize the possibilities of using it in existing diesel engines
  • Marked barriers for the spreading of the product should be overcome.

As part of the innovation consortium, international research and development surroundings will be built within the biodiesel area.

Finally, through communication the consortium will contribute to spread the knowledge of biodiesel as a sustainable energy source for the transport sector, both as regards production, application and environmental advantages. During the communication activities, ethical competences will also be included to be able to explore possible ethical barriers by the introduction of second-generation biodiesel.
