In contrast to conventional microstructural analyses, Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) provides detail on the more advanced microstructural properties of metals:

These microstructural properties influence key material properties, e.g.:
- Stress corrosion cracking resistance
- Deformation behavior
- Magnetic susceptibility
- Chemical reactivity

The mechanical properties of ferritic and austenitic stainless steels are sensitive to the precipitation of intermetallic sigma phase, which causes the metal to lose ductility, toughness, stability and corrosion resistance. Minimizing the content of the sigma phase in stainless steels is therefore of great interest for many applications. EBSD can detect, localize and quantify the amount of sigma phase in stainless steel and thereby assist in improving component performance and lifetime.
Many manufacturing processes are highly dependent on material properties that are directly related to the texture. Development of unfavourable textures during fabrication or end use can induce weakening of the material and cause component failure. The texture is critical in manufacturing processes where the components are fabricated under high material deformation such as deep-drawing. EBSD can determine the texture of metallic and ceramic materials and provide the required information for optimizing high deformation manufacturing processes.
