Mechanical testing of metals

Does your product, structure, or material meet the quality requirements? Whether the requirements are according to a standard, an international norm, or internal specifications, we can test it and provide you with independent third‑party documentation of the results.

Standardised testing

Are you dealing with a material for which you, for example, do not have a certificate, or whose properties you do not know? In that case, you cannot document the material’s essential properties. The solution is standardised tests, where the material is tested according to internationally recognised test methods, and where the result can be used as documentation – also outside Denmark.

At the Danish Technological Institute, we have many years of experience with standardised material testing. We are a DANAK‑accredited test laboratory according to ISO 17025, which means that we are subject to the requirements of the Danish Accreditation Fund (DANAK). This ensures the highest quality and means that you can confidently proceed based on the results of your material testing.

Within standardised testing, we are specialists in performing tests in connection with, for example, upgrading of material certificates or quality control of materials.

We are, among other things, accredited to perform the following tests:

  • Tensile testing according to ISO 6892‑1 up to 1200 kN
  • Impact testing according to ISO 148‑1 down to –196 °C
  • Bend testing according to ISO 15630‑1
  • Hardness testing according to several scales, such as Brinell, Rockwell, etc.

A complete overview of standards and types of tests can be found in our full product catalogue at the bottom of the page.

Functional testing

The requirements for product documentation have increased, and often there is a need to test product properties to meet them. Here, the solution can be specialised functional tests, where the product is subjected to very specific loading scenarios.

We have extensive experience in functional testing of both large and small structures and products. These tests are often carried out according to a standard, where we also provide advice on which standards are relevant and how the test itself should be set up.

If no applicable norm exists, we will, in collaboration with you or your company, develop a test plan and setup that ensures you obtain the necessary knowledge and documentation tailored specifically to your product.

In our test laboratory, we can use test machines with a capacity of up to 1200 kN in tension and 5000 kN in compression. In addition, in our 140‑square‑metre strong floor area, we can set up larger tests of structures. In this context, we use advanced calibrated measuring equipment such as load cells, displacement transducers, and strain gauges to provide precise results for loads and deformations in the structure.

On-site testing

Sometimes it is not possible to take items out for testing – or it may be most valuable to test the product in operation. We therefore also carry out tailor‑made tests according to standards and customer specifications on‑site at companies. This can make the work easier for you and your company, as you do not have to worry about logistics. At the same time, you can be present during the test, follow the process, and ask questions along the way.

Regardless of the type of test needed, we prepare a descriptive and understandable report presenting the test results – this report can be used for future documentation.

The tests are conducted by a specialised team of engineers with extensive combined experience in mechanical testing. In addition, the testing often takes place in close cooperation with our metallurgists and other centres at the Danish Technological Institute.
