Packing machines

Packing machines are typically designed to produce the same product in large series. In a dynamic market, there is often a need to be able to quickly convert and produce on orders in very small series. The Technological Institute has for many years been working on making packaging machines flexible.


The Technological Institute was a partner in the EU project, PicknPack. This project was completed in the period 2012-16. The PicknPack system is designed to evaluate the individual foods, pack them in trays and deliver quality information about this product directly to consumers, as well as to retailers and manufacturers. The top foil is printed just before it is welded on the trays, and this sheet contains the most vital information about the quality. A QR code has also been printed that directs the consumer to a website where all product information can be found. The print on the top foil is adapted to the retail chain where the packaged product will be sold, which may be different for each package. Manufacturers do not need to have a stock of different packaging materials for different retail chains, they can flexibly print the actual information about the product inside.

The system ensures that consumers get the desired product quality and also provide invaluable information to the retail sector, which logistically can link quality to sales figures and optimize their future offers accordingly. Also, the producers can use the information as feedback to management and production decisions and optimize their operation.

The project has focused on tomatoes on stalks, grapes and ready meals, which are not the easiest food products to handle or assess the quality of. It is argued that if these products can be handled properly, you can also work with all other fresh and processed foods.

The concept can be applied to almost all foods packed in trays with a top film, but some of the technologies developed in the project can also be used for other packaging, such as cardboard, bags, etc.

The entire system can work under low temperatures and can even be used in a modified atmosphere environment, ensuring optimal quality of the final product.
