Removal of unwanted microorganisms

Do you have the right strategy for disinfection – does it work optimally?

Problems with unwanted microorganisms often arise because of an inadequate strategy for cleaning and disinfection. By exploiting the know-how and analytical capabilities at DTI, you can get more insight into the effectiveness of your current disinfection strategy.

Microorganisms result in operational problems and production loss

Microorganisms have a fascinating - yet frustrating - ability to cling on to surfaces and form so-called biofilms, i.e. tenacious aggregates of microorganisms encapsulated in protective extracellular slime. Biofilm-forming microorganisms often result in fouling of membranes and contamination of equipment, which makes it difficult to comply with hygienic standards. Once a biofilm has been formed, it becomes extremely tolerant to typical disinfectants – in some cases up to 1000 times as tolerant.

Is it too late to take action?

Preventive actions are very important to avoid operational issues and production loss. It is, however, not too late to take action after the problem has arisen, and in most cases an early effort can remove the biofilm problem. One approach is an effective disinfection strategy.

Overcome the unwanted microorganisms

Let DTI clarify the possible root causes of the microbiological problems. Based on sampling, analyses and knowhow, we can outline possible solutions, so you can get rid of the problems with microorganisms in the production systems.

DTI suggests a three-step plan:

Step 1
Initially, it must be determined, which enemy we are facing. In other words, DTI exploits cultivation and cultivation-independent methods to determine exactly which microorganisms are causing the biofilm-related problems.

Step 2
Subsequently, we give advice on the selection of potent biocides that have an effect on the given biofilm, so the microorganisms can be removed efficiently.

Step 3
Finally, we advise on how to avoid future problems with microorganisms and biofilms.

How can DTI help?

No matter which microbiological problem you’re facing, DTI is the partner of choice for fast and efficient troubleshooting. DTI’s cutting-edge analytical technologies and know-how are second to none with respect to identification of microorganisms and simulation of biofilm formation:

  • Quick and confidential on-site assistance with removal of unwanted microorganisms
  • More than 25 years of experience with identification, characterisation and removal of biofilms in technical systems
  • Expertise in sampling – even the best analytical methods are worthless without the right primary sample
  • MALDI-TOF Biotyper Workflow for fast and specific genus- and species-level identification of microorganisms from agar plates
  • Characterization of possible biofilm occurrence by microscopy
  • Cultivation-independent methods for identification and quantification of microorganisms (PCR, NGS-sequencing, FISH)
