Many consumers have difficulties opening retail packaging. Everything indicates that about half of the population has problems at least weekly. Often, product manufacturers are not aware of consumer problems. Sometimes it is due to ignorance about the correct use of the packaging. What is obvious to the manufacturer is not necessarily obvious to the consumer.
Finally, some packages simply require greater physical strength than the target group of the product has. The Danish Technological Institute has been in charge of a project that, with a website would make life easier for packaging manufactures as it explains the following:
- Descriptions of typical consumer challenges in text and video
- Guidance in accurate packaging development
- Calculation system that gives the packaging designer a clear answer to who can or can not open a given packaging.
