Approval and certification schemes - Water and drainage - Danish Technological Institute

Products and components that are included in drinking water and drainage installations are subject to strict requirements ensuring durability of the products and preventing the release of health harzardous substances as well as taste and odour into the drinking water.

As documentation that your product complies with applicable legislation, there are a number of different certification and approval schemes.

In order for your product to obtain an approval or a certificate, a type test must be carried out according to a recognized standard or method. Subsequently, regular inspection and audit testing must be carried out.

A product approval - e.g. a VA approval or a GDV approval - is a document that proves that your product complies with the relevant legislation. You can read more about both approval schemes below.

Approval and certification schemes
ETA-Danmark: A Danish approval body issuing VA approvals. The VA approval is a voluntary scheme for water supply and drainage products, which covers the mechanical and physical requirements of the Danish building regulations.

RISE: A Swedish certification body issuing type approvals to verify the conformity of building products with the requirements of the Swedish building regulations.

Kiwa Sverige: A Swedish certification body issuing type approvals to verify the conformity of building products with the requirements of the Swedish building regulations.

SINTEF Certification: A Norwegian certification body issuing product certificates to verify the conformity of building products with the requirements of the Norwegian building regulations.

Eurofins Expert Service OY: A Finnish certification body issuing product certificates to verify the conformity of building products with the requirements of the Finnish building regulations.

DVGW CERT GmbH: A German certification body issuing product certificates to verify the conformity of building products with the requirements of the German building regulations.

INSTA-CERT: A voluntary certification scheme consisting of a Nordic group of certification bodies. An INSTA-CERT certificate is valid and applicable in all the Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The Nordic Poly Mark is used for verification.

Approval and certification schemes covering health related requirements:

UBA Attestation of Conformity of product hygiene suitability for drinking water:
A new German certification scheme covering all products used for drinking water supply and in domestic installations, entered into force in March 2021. Due to the corona pandemic, it is possible to issue temporary certificates based on type tests until March 2023.
Umweltbundesamt (UBA), which is the German environmental agency, has prepared new evaluation criteria (BWGL) describing the general requirements of the German drinking water regulation, TrinkwV, for materials in contact with drinking water.
Conformity certification can be issued by various private certification bodies, e.g. DVGW CERT GmbH, Hygiene-Institut des Ruhrgebiets (Hy-Cert), OFI CERT, Eurofins Expert Services Oy and Kiwa.
DK-VAND
A voluntary certification scheme for pipes, fittings and tanks made of plastic material used in the supply network. The scheme is administered by Dancert.
