Sr Functionalized Ti Implants for Accelerated Bone Ingrowth
Project title: Sr functionalized Ti implants for accelerated bone ingrowth
Start: Summer 2010
Ending: Summer 2014
The aim of this project is to develop a new production platform for next generation dental implants. Titanium implants will be functionalized with strontium (Sr) to reduce healing time and facilitate accelerated bone ingrowth. The coating is further intended for implants in e.g. orthopedic applications. The coating can be applied on other implant materials such as stainless steel, PEEK and zirconia. The Sr-functionalized coatings are deposited by industrial-scale PVD techniques (Physical Vapour Deposition).
The developed coatings have been successfully tested in animal models and have shown significant improvement of bone formation compared to uncoated titanium reference implants. The coating has been patented.
