Project – Water purification using Membrane Bio Reactors

Innovation consortium MemBio

Project starts April 2008. Expected completion December 2012.

Membrane-Bio-Reactor (MBR) technology represents a technological spring in relation to traditional biological sewage technology. The technology combines microbiological processes by the separation of dissolved and suspended components via a membrane barrier. MBR technology results in an extremely compact design compared to traditional technology, in addition, there is a great improvement in drainage quality with regard to the environment, plus potential health damaging content matter and hygiene quality. The consortium wishes to develop scientific and cost-effective solutions for some of the challenges, which at the moment limit the technologies full potential. One of the main problem areas is minimizing cost in connection with fouling of the system’s membranes.  

Project Objectives
The overall objective of the project is to work with different subject areas regarding running and construction efficiency of Membrane Bio Reactors for waste water treatment:

  • Develop techniques to improve management and control of, amongst other things, fouling and oxidisation in MBR plants.
  • Better understanding and control of microbiologic processes in MBR plants.
