Project start November 2011. Completed November 2014.
GAIABoard is a product development project co-funded by the EUROSTARS Eureka program and coordinated by the Danish Technological Institute. The project’s name stands for “Green Alkali-Activated Cement Board” and the main goal is to develop and market a new type of building panels based on alkali-activated cements. Such panels represent a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to existing Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)-based panels. At present, approximately 250 million m2 of cement-based panels are produced annually worldwide and used for various indoor and outdoor applications in construction. Alkali-activated binders can be produced from industrial by-products such as fly ash and blast furnace slag. Its hardening process occurs in alkaline solution and yields a hard and tough binder that can replace OPC, contributing to reduce CO2 emissions originated from cement production. In addition to investigating climate-friendly cements, part of the project focuses on ensuring that the newly developed plates are easy to handle. Also, a large survey involving builders and architects allows for understanding the end-users’ needs. To achieve a high impact, the performance of the new plates will be tested in mock-up of a building under realistic circumstances in a pilot construction. Moreover, the plate’s properties will be evaluated and compared to those from plates produced with standard materials, so as to achieve both technical and green certifications. The research and product development phases will ensure the project delivers a competitive construction plate of high-quality and proven sustainability.
- Identify and further develop an alkali-activated cement types suitable for building panels production
