Plant Technology - Air purifying properties of plants

Many potted houseplants are marketed as air purifying, when it comes to reducing dust particles, CO2 and volatiles from furniture, building materials and paint. The marketing of the various plant species is largely based on a study conducted by NASA in the 1980’s, which document the effect, but does not quantify it. At the Danish Technological Institute, we quantify the effect of various plant solutions using a standardized test, and we provide a consulting service about factors that relate to the air purifying properties of plants.

We offer

  • A standardised test documenting and quantifying the air purifying properties of different plant species to remove formaldehyde from indoor air.
  • Supplemental tests of the air purifying properties of different plant species to remove a broad spectrum of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) from the indoor climate.
  • A characterisation of the ability of plants to influence the indoor climate in relation to CO2, humidity and temperature.
  • A test report, which can be used in marketing.
  • Consulting and knowledge about the air purifying properties of different plant species.
