Accelerating sustainable biorefinery and fermentation innovation in the Biosolutions Technology Center at Danish Technological Institute
Select Page
The Biosolutions Technology Center at Danish Technological Institute empowers companies to develop, test, and scale up biobased processes and products - such as novel food ingredients or alternative protein solutions - through access to world-class pilot and laboratory facilities.
The green transition imposes significant and new demands on the agriculture and food industry. There is a need for new compositions of the foods we use, as well as a need to optimise the resource input and output in production.
These are just some of the questions that we at Danish Technological Institute can help answer through testing in our integrated biorefining and biofermentation pilot plants.

Your bridge from lab to industrial scale
Biosolutions Technology Center serves as a unique innovation hub, offering:
- Food-approved laboratories https://www.findsmiley.dk/754655
- State-of-the-art biorefining and fermentation pilot plants
- Suite of fermenters (1 L, 10 L, and 200 L; expansion in progress)
- Pilot-scale biorefining, fermentation, and downstream processing (including centrifugation, filtration, and spray drying)
- Microalgae cultivation facilities
- Integrated process development and validation
- Capability to handle both conventional and GMO (Genetically Modified Organism 1) processes
The transformation towards a sustainable and circular bioeconomy is imposing new and complex demands on agriculture and food production in Denmark, Zealand, and the broader EU region. There is a pressing need to reimagine food composition, optimise resource efficiency, and valorise agricultural side-streams—driving both environmental and commercial value.
At the Biosolutions Technology Center, we address these industry challenges through advanced, integrated pilot plants for both biorefining and fermentation. Whether you seek to convert beet tops into novel food ingredients, utilise grass clippings for higher-value purposes, or produce alternative protein solutions, our facilities are designed to support your innovation and scalability needs.
What We Offer
Expertise and facilities. Biosolutions Technology Center gives you access to:
- Expert knowledge in biorefining, fermentation, downstream processing, and microalgae cultivation
- Cutting-edge, food-grade equipment for process development, scale-up, and prototype manufacturing
- Capabilities to handle both conventional and GMO 1 organisms at laboratory scale and pilot scale
- Prepare techno-economic assessment as input to business case (LCC) and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)
This can include the development of new plant-based foods as well as the use of more advanced technologies and processes to produce alternative food ingredients or vegetable building blocks, e.g. as meat substitutes. This can be achieved through precision fermentation. It is crucial to utilize by-products and side streams from the agriculture and food industry with a focus on sustainability and circular economy. Additionally, there is a need to test and evaluate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of whether the developed processes and products are sustainable and scalable to an industrial scale.
