Summary

BrightWall is a R&D project supported by the European Commission through the Seventh Framework Program (FP7). The project targets the development of a completely new building material – translucent concrete – in the form of a concrete sandwich panel, which has high architectural and aesthetic potential. Also, BrightWall meets important considerations for both energy efficiency and indoor climate through the supply of natural light. The final solution combines high-strength concrete with precisely embedded optical fibers and can be used both in façades and load bearing applications. The primary application of the new material is to build daylight-transferring exterior walls in new buildings and renovations. Besides the impact on lighting costs and emission savings, the BrightWall enables supplying high-quality natural light into buildings, affecting individuals’ health positively. From a conceptual perspective, BrightWall targets radical innovations enabling dynamic control of daylight transmission through liquid crystals and addresses S&T barriers related to the production of prefabricated wall sandwich panels with embedded optical guides and thermal insulation. The project is developed by a consortium of nine international entities that have a strategic interest in the project’s outcome having mutual complementarity between them. These entities include SMEs and research centres of excellence in various countries.

  • Develop a cost-competitive, innovative concrete material that allows for transmitting daylight into buildings and has clear advantages in terms of energy efficiency and indoor climate regulation.
