DIGISTONE - Innovative digital concrete screen
Project start November 2012. Completed March 2015.
Summary
The DIGISTONE project is a R&D project supported by the European Commission through the Seventh Framework Program (FP7) for the benefit of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME). The project focused on the development of large concrete multimedia displays for outdoor digital signage and commercial applications. For that, an innovative and intelligent building material in the format of a concrete media façade/display was developed. Such concrete are embedded with optical fibres that enable a live image or natural daylight to be transmitted. The ability to reproduce multimedia content directly onto large building or free standing walls has benefits when compared to outdoor media and advertising market alternatives, most notably offering complete vandalism- and weather-proof digital signage and lighting. It also enables novel applications with a range of unique selling points to a very large group of potential end-users. Also, the technology has the potential to benefit urban heritage and preservation as well as the environmental footprint of the street furniture industry due to drastically reduced maintenance requirements.
