Project - Biomass – Market barriers and new resources

Project start September 2008. Completion August 2011.

The project has finished

In the EUBIONET III project analyses were performed of the development in utilization of biomass for energy purposes in different countries, and solutions were given to overcome specific barriers, which obstructed the development of international trading of biomass. Moreover, the possibilities for further development in biomass trade was reported. Special attention was given to the industrial sectors had not been involved in bioenergy projects before. These sectors were identified during the project and included for instance the metal- and construction industries. Three expert group meetings and an international trade event were organized to discuss the important current market barriers and formulate solutions and strategies to overcome the barriers.

Before the project, large amounts of potential raw materials for biofuel were traded without the bioenergy sector having knowledge of this. This was due to not fully developed systems for reporting of trading statistics. The development of a comprehensive and detailed “Combined Nomenclature” (CN-codes) for raw materials makes the market more transparent and helps in the identification of types and amounts of raw materials that possibly are available for bioenergy purposes. The project was carried out in cooperation with EUROSTAT and national statistic organizations.

The project objectives were:

  • Analysis of national biomass programs and potential for biofuel, particularly with respect to different industrial waste products and agricultural biomass.
  • Promotion of international trade with biomass, analysis of price mechanisms and proposal for new CN-codes for biofuel.
  • Description of criteria for certification and sustainability regarding biofuels, which was carried out in cooperation with market operators.

Execution of the new CN-standards for solid biofuels was supported.

  • Utilization of bioenergy was promoted by increasing the knowledge of heating and cooling with respect to replacing fossil fuels with biomass.
  • The correct utilization of biomass resources was assessed by analyzing the availability of raw material in the following sectors: bioenergy, timber industry and agriculture.
