Project - Intelligent Goods Transport Systems
I-GTS
The project is completed.
Project start 01.07.2008. Expected completion date 31.12.2012.
This innovation consortium seeks to connect public intelligent traffic systems, with the technology of transport and equipment, as well as incorporate IT solutions to create IT Transport-Technological Demonstration Programs. The programs will subsequently be disseminated in the transport sector via various initiatives.
The effort will focus on exploiting the available technology in trucks, road systems, GPS systems and corporate systems in order to develop Intelligent Goods Transport Systems, and to optimise service and transport in order to realise the above-mentioned potential.
The objective is within reach, but requires innovative interconnection and exchange of data between private and public systems.
New IT solutions must be developed to increase efficiency and lower the environmental impact of goods transportation by integration of mobile devices, public antennae networks, GPS sensors, traffic signals, car computers etc.
Project Objectives
The Innovation Consortium I-GTS (Intelligent Goods Transport Systems) primary objective is to create IT Transport-Technological Demonstration Programs via innovative interconnection and exchange of data between trucks, haulage contractors and public road systems in order to increase capacity usage and efficiency, and to decrease the environmental impact of goods transport.
Intermediate Aims
To develop solutions for logistics and transport chains, in which linkage of available information from various systems can interact in order to discover ways for more efficient use of the transport systems in a broad sense, including potential effects on infrastructure and the solutions required.
- To develop systems that can handle various forms of ICT in communication with the company car fleet, its customers and the authorities.
- To develop automation which, on the basis of logistical data, data from the transport companies’ systems and data from the public road authorities, can optimise the individual truck’s performance, in order to optimise transport, cargo handling and safety.
- To integrate and develop open standard systems, which make it possible to create light solutions and ’plug-’n-play’ solutions, where small and medium-sized businesses can be included.
- To enhance efficiency across logistics and transport chains by utilising and managing the new information which will be created.
- To promote effective management and use of the large volumes of information coming from the systems.
- To create safe methods for integration of heterogeneous systems, ensuring that data is not compromised, falsified, stolen or otherwise interfered with.
- To investigate whether investments in infrastructure could be postponed or replaced by intelligent transport systems if all new major investments undergo alternative ICT analysis.
What can be achieved?
"20-40 % reduction in energy consumption and 20-60 % reduction in time are dramatic perspectives at a time when growth in the transport industry has been above the growth in GDP for more than 20 years. This growth presents a number of challenges for communities, businesses and citizens in the form of environmental impact traffic congestion, accidents etc."
