Extrusion company converts plastic waste into new products

The company SP Extrusion has made recycling plastic waste a part of its business strategy by reusing plastic for items such as noise barriers and floor planks.

Every day, an enormous amount of plastic is produced globally, generating a lot of plastic waste. Some of this plastic waste can be recycled into the same products, while creative thinking is required to reuse the plastic waste that cannot be recycled directly.
SP Extrusion A/S works strategically to recycle plastic, both from its own production and from sources such as household waste and artificial turf. The plastic is transformed into new products like noise barriers, tiles, and floor planks.

- We receive the plastic at the factory, and here we can blend it from several different silos and still achieve a fairly homogeneous product. We press the plastic into planks weighing around five kilos, says Jan Kyster Madsen, CEO at SP Extrusion.

The company has, among other things, collaborated with Re-Match A/S to convert plastic from artificial turf pitches into planks, with the weight of the planks highlighted as one of the product's advantages.

We must recycle more and more plastic

The increasing trend towards sustainability requires us to change how we produce and use our resources. The Danish Technological Institute works with technologies and projects for recycling plastic that bring value to industry and views the work at SP Extrusion as an important contribution to the recycling agenda.

This is a really good example of plastic recycling. Plastic waste is collected, processed, and a new product is created. Globally, around eight billion tons of plastic have been produced to date, and about 30 percent of this is still in circulation – and it must be recycled

- Peter Sommer-Larsen, Danish Technological Institute.

Throughout SP Group as a whole, there is a fundamental belief that all plastic should be recycled whenever possible, especially as the group operates globally.

- Today, we recycle about 97 percent of our production waste, and the goal is to recycle 100 percent within 2-3 years. In addition, we import household waste from Germany and the Netherlands for our products, so we can now say that we use more waste than we generate ourselves, says Jan Kyster Madsen.

The Danish Technological Institute collaborates with SP Extrusion on several recycling projects, including so-called ‘high-value plastic’, such as soft PVC, which is used in many plastic products today.
