Introduction to sustainability – basic framework, history and concepts

Get introduced to sustainability as a concept and practice. Learn what it means when companies, institutions, products, services become sustainable. With this course you will understand sustainability factually - moving beyond mere buzzword and trends to gain insight and knowledge. The course is in English, and you have access for 365 days.

Gain basic knowledge about concepts, frameworks and models within sustainability

In this course, you will get definitions and concepts in place, so you can understand and delve into sustainable issues, solutions or strategies.

You will gain insight into the basic principles of sustainability, and what it entails, its historical roots, and the status of sustainable development at the present time. The course is a structured review of the most essential models, concepts, frameworks, and laws that can help you develop strategies.

Prerequisites

You are new to sustainability and need basic knowledge in the field.
 
 

At the end of the course, you will be able to

  • The concept of sustainability and its historical roots.
  • Fundamental principles such as circular economy, climate calculations, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Triple Bottom Line, and ESG.
  • The framework for national and international legislation, including requirements and recommendations.
  • Dilemmas, contradictions, and trade-offs in sustainability issues.

Historical background for current agreements

  • The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • The most important political events and agreements for the sustainable agenda in Europe
  • National and international sustainability initiatives
  • The interplay between the different agreements and the impact on sustainable development

Get a handle on basic concepts and sustainability models

  • The concept of sustainability: This includes sustainable development and green transition, climate and environment, renewable and non-renewable natural resources, greenwashing and greenhushing
  • Basic circular strategies including circular economy
  • Greenhouse gases and CO2's role in climate calculations

Framework and legislation

  • The most used models: for example, SDGs and the three pillars of sustainability/Triple Bottom line
  • Legislation: the general requirements and recommendations
  • Basic European and Danish environmental goals and their key components

Ecosystems – Technology and business

  • Summarize the three scopes (1,2 and 3) of value chains and how it affects a business ecosystem Interplay and dilemmas Understand the contradictions and trade-offs that often arise in sustainability issues

Form

Self-guided digital learning in a engaging online setting. The course consists of 5 modules that you can go through in any sequence that fits your schedule. The instructional materials vary in format, including videos, podcasts, and written texts. Upon completion of each module, your understanding will be tested by multiple choice based on what you've learned. You'll have a year-long access to the course, providing the flexibility to engage with the content at your convenience, regardless of location or time.
