Training course: Refrigeration and heat pump systems with ammonia

This course provides in-depth knowledge on refrigeration and heat pump systems using ammonia as refrigerant. Through a mix of theory, plant inspections, and digital exercises, you will learn about the properties of ammonia, typical plant configurations including safety aspects and sizing of components.

This 2-day course covers a wide range of aspects of refrigeration and heat pump systems using ammonia as a refrigerant.

The theoretical part of the course includes:

  • Properties of ammonia as a refrigerant
  • Design principles and typical plant configurations for ammonia systems
  • Safety aspects in ammonia systems
  • Design and sizing of main components
  • Control of ammonia systems
  • Oil management, water management
  • Typical faults and maintenance aspects

The practical part of the course consists of plant inspections and digital exercises that support the theory.

The course I taught in English, but participants will have the possibility to ask questions in Danish (the course will be held in Danish if all participants understand Danish).

Participant profile

This course is ideal for technicians, engineers, maintenance staff, and other professionals who work with or are interested in refrigeration and heat pump systems that use ammonia as a refrigerant. Participants should have basic knowledge of refrigeration technology.

Organization

Wiebke Brix Markussen is a senior consultant at the Center for Refrigeration and Heat Pump Technology. She has many years of experience with research and development in the field of cooling and heat pumps and is a very experienced teacher.

Jóhannes Kristófersson is Senior Project Manager at the Centre for Refrigeration and Heat Pump Technology. He has many years of experience with practical operation, design and research and development within ammonia systems.

Learning outcomes

  • In-depth understanding of the unique properties of ammonia as a refrigerant.
  • Knowledge of essential safety issues related to handling ammonia.
  • Understanding of typical system designs for larger refrigeration and heat pump installations.
  • Knowledge of relevant digital calculation tools used for dimensioning components.
