Frequently Asked Questions About Air-to-Air Heat Pump Testing

If you have questions about testing standards, seasonal heating and cooling calculations (SCOP/SEER), acoustic measurements, or certification pathways for air-to-air and air source heat pumps (AAHP / ASHP), our FAQ provides a quick overview of key technical topics.

You can find answers to additional questions on our page Accredited Heat Pump Testing for Certification and European Market Access, and you are always welcome to contact Preben Eskerod directly to discuss your specific testing requirements using the contact form on the right.

Which standards and regulations apply to air-to-air heat pump testing?

Air-to-air heat pumps are tested according to harmonised European standards including EN 14511 for capacity and energy efficiency ratings, EN 14825 for seasonal space heating and cooling performance (SCOP, SEER, and seasonal space heating efficiency ηs), and EN 12102-1 for sound power determinations. These measurements establish the technical documentation required for compliance with Ecodesign Regulation EU 206/2012 (or EU 2016/2281 for systems above 12 kW) and Energy Labelling Regulation EU 626/2011.

Can air-to-air test reports be used for European certification schemes?

SYes. Danish Technological Institute is accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and is a recognized test laboratory under key European certification schemes including CEN Heat Pump KEYMARK, the EHPA Quality Label, and Eurovent. Test reports issued by our laboratory can be applied directly when seeking product certification and national subsidy approvals across Europe.

How are acoustic sound power levels measured for split-system air-to-air units?

Sound power measurements are performed in dedicated acoustic test environments in accordance with EN 12102-1 and relevant ISO standards. Indoor units (wall, floor, or ceiling mounted) and outdoor condensing units are evaluated separately while operating at defined thermal rating points under representative compressor and fan speeds. This provides precise, repeatable decibel levels for energy labelling and market surveillance compliance.

Can the laboratory safely handle flammable refrigerants like R32 and R290?

Yes. The test facilities are equipped with integrated gas detection arrays, ATEX-rated mechanical exhaust ventilation, and spark-free electrical connections. This enables safe, compliant testing of both mildly flammable A2L refrigerants such as R32 and R454B and flammable A3 natural refrigerants such as propane R290.

What documentation is included in the accredited test report?

You receive an accredited test report containing tabulated performance metrics across all test points, calculated seasonal performance figures (SCOP and SEER), raw operational logs covering temperatures, airflows, and power consumption, acoustic frequency spectra, and photographic identification of nameplates and critical internal components to guarantee complete product traceability.

Can our development team monitor the testing process remotely?

Yes. We offer secure online data access that allows your engineering team to monitor operational parameters, air temperatures, electrical metrics, and system stability in real time—including outside standard laboratory hours. If adjustments to settings or controls are needed during test setup, our test engineers collaborate directly with your team to implement them efficiently.
