CitCom.ai – making cities smarter with AI and robotics
The Danish Technological Institute provides test and experimentation facilities, as well as knowledge and expertise, to ensure that your AI technology is trialled, verified, and made ready for the market.
AI has significant, untapped potential to modernise cities, optimise infrastructure, and improve our society in general.
For example, to reduce our energy consumption, avoid traffic congestion, or have goods delivered by mobile robots or drones.
However, this places great demands on the testing and development of safe and reliable AI and robotic solutions to reach this point.
Danish companies seeking to mature new AI technology for urban and rural areas can obtain assistance from the Danish Technological Institute via the EU initiative CitCom.ai.
Who can participate?
CitCom.ai is an offer for companies that can save development time and costs, as well as minimise risks, by having their AI and robot technology tested by experts in DTI's robotics laboratories.
The aim is to trial AI and robot technology before it comes into contact with the user.
Technology providers
...who have a newly developed AI or robotic solution can have their product trialled and validated in a realistic and controlled setting. This provides a seal of quality which can be decisive in moving the solution from the development phase closer to a market-ready product.
Technology users
...who wish to implement AI and robotic technology can receive assistance in identifying and testing relevant solutions. The expertise of the Danish Technological Institute reduces risk and increases the likelihood that the technology delivers the desired value.
How can DTI help you?
We provide test and experimentation facilities, as well as knowledge and expertise, to ensure that your AI technology is trialled, verified, and made ready for the market.
As a participant, you gain access to DTI’s advanced equipment and facilities, where you can test technologies for the practical use of AI, robots, and drones in urban and rural areas.
Our European network makes it possible to work and test across borders to gain access to the right expertise.
Testing and validation
Testing of various AI solutions relevant to specific applications, and support for robot and drone companies in implementation and deployment. For example, new sensors and algorithms for localisation and positioning.
Screening and implementation support
Support for AI technology providers, e.g. robot and drone companies, in identifying relevant AI technologies and assisting them in integrating these into their future products.
Safety incl. "Sandbox testing"
Testing and validation of safety and regulatory parameters in a controlled "sandbox environment" before testing in the real environment. For example, stopping distances for mobile robots at different speeds, payloads, etc.

About CitCom.ai
The CitCom.ai initiative (Artificial Intelligence Testing and Experimentation Facilities for Smart Cities & Communities) is a European effort to establish a range of testing and experimental facilities (TEFs) from 2023–2027.
The aim is to accelerate the development of reliable AI in Europe by providing companies with access to test and trial AI-based products under real-world conditions.
CitCom.ai focuses on three main themes:
Power
For example, local district heating load forecasts, autonomous street lighting, and cybersecurity.
Move
For example, predicting pedestrian flows in cities, smart intersections, and autonomous transport.
Connect
For example, noise management, water and waste management, and goods delivery with mobile robots and drones.
In Denmark, the initiative consists of the Danish Technological Institute, WE BUILD DENMARK, Gate21, Center Denmark, and Aarhus City Lab.
In its initial phase, CitCom.ai has 33 partners across 11 EU countries, with a total budget of 300 million DKK over five years.
