Determination of odour and environmentally harmful substances

Agriculture and waste management facilities can face significant challenges regarding emissions of odour and environmentally harmful substances, and they are often subject to strict regulations in this area, which can hinder the development and expansion of the industry. Additionally, relations with the surrounding area and local community are often strained by this type of emission.

Odour and environmentally harmful substances are typically emitted in complex mixtures of hundreds of different chemical compounds, which means that measuring and determining them is highly complex.

At Danish Technological Institute, we specialise in odour emissions from agriculture and industries that handle biodegradable material, including biogas production and wastewater treatment.

For example, we can help with:

  • Accredited odour sampling. Danish Technological Institute is accredited by DANAK for odour sampling, thereby meeting the applicable requirements for environmental regulation and testing.
  • Identification and determination of the chemical composition of odourants using state-of-the-art measuring equipment (PTR-MS and GC). It is often advantageous to know the specific composition and chemical properties of the substances causing the odour problems, as well as where they arise in a given process. This allows for more targeted and often more cost-effective odour reduction measures.
  • Testing of odour-reducing technologies and consultancy in connection with testing for approval on the Danish Environmental Protection Agency’s Technology List (for agricultural environmental technologies) or in accordance with national and international standards (ETV, VERA).
  • Development of new odour-reducing technologies and strategies. We can assist throughout the entire process, from initial idea to technology development, laboratory, pilot or full-scale testing, and assessment of the technology's effectiveness.
  • Consultancy regarding odour measurements. Our specialists can help evaluate and optimise the odour measurement methods used. In addition, we can assist in evaluating OML atmospheric dispersion calculations.
