Electrification without increased grid connection capacity
Is your company facing the need to phase out gas, electrify a process or expand production - but without the option of getting more capacity from the electricity grid?
In many cases, there are solutions that can help you move forward. We can help you identify them.
If a company cannot get the grid connection or capacity it needs, there are essentially two options: wait for grid capacity to be expanded or find a way to move forward within the framework already available.
The potential often lies in combining technologies so that energy demand, power consumption and timing work better together. Typical combinations may include:
- heat pumps and thermal storage
- batteries and smart energy management
- energy efficiency improvements and flexible operation
The fastest capacity is not necessarily new capacity - it may also be the capacity freed up through smarter use of energy.
How we can help
At the Danish Technological Institute, we help companies find a realistic way forward when electrification is limited by grid connection constraints or insufficient grid capacity.
We can help with:
Initial clarification
Mapping energy consumption and bottlenecks
Technical analysis of solutions
Dimensioning and calculations
Roadmaps for electrification
Testing, documentation and implementation

Background: The capacity crisis in the Danish electricity grid
Demand for connection to the Danish electricity grid has increased significantly. Energinet, Denmark’s national transmission system operator, has stated that applications for new electricity consumption currently in the queue correspond to around 60 GW, while Denmark’s current maximum electricity consumption is approximately 7 GW.
This development is driven by factors such as electrification, data centers, batteries, Power-to-X, heat pumps and other electricity-based solutions. At the same time, the electricity grid has not been expanded at the pace and scale now required by demand.
This has resulted in longer waiting times for grid connection and, in some cases, a lack of access to the capacity required for new projects. Energinet has therefore temporarily paused new grid connections.
