Microbial solutions for agriculture
We assist companies in development and verification of microbial-based bioproducts for agriculture, including biostimulants, biofertilizers, soil amendments and biogas-related organic solutions.
With our long expertise in soil microbiology and bioengineering, we support the entire process – from identification, isolation, stimulation and verification of native microorganisms to field-scale application.
Our BioSolutions team combines the latest microbiological knowledge and analytical methods with practical agricultural experience. Our approach reduces product development risk by identifying biological and agronomic uncertainties and limitations early in the process, improving the effectiveness and robustness of the final product application.
We are involved in the entire biosolutions value chain, ranging from plant stimulation and protection to the bioremediation of contaminated soils, surface and groundwater.
How can Danish Technological Institute help you?
- Targeted isolation and screening of microorganisms
- Development of microbial products for improved nitrogen use efficiency
- Validation through controlled laboratory and field trials
- Biobanking and long-term storage of isolates
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural soil
- Upcycling of different bio-waste into value-creating products
- Application of biomass from biogas production as a biofertilizer or bioremedial medium for nutrient-depleted and/or pesticide-PFAS-challenged soils
- Consultancy throughout the entire product development process
Microbial products tested in practice
The market for microbial fertilizer products is growing rapidly, but many products fail to deliver on their promises under real field conditions. Danish Technological Institute helps ensure that your product performs under real agricultural conditions.
"We are a non-academic institution in Denmark that offers this service in connection to high quality field trials. Customers are offered the complete package from ideation to field testing with rigor and documentation throughout the entire process."
Pawel Lycus, Senior Specialist at Danish Technological Institute
From Idea to field test
Development of successful bioproducts requires a deep understanding of microbial physiology and ecology. For example: Free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria will only fix nitrogen in low-nitrogen soils, as their nitrogen fixation is inhibited by the presence of ammonium. This knowledge is crucial for designing products that function effectively.
Our process:
- Targeted isolation and screening: We isolate microorganisms with desired properties
- Testing and optimization: We test isolates under laboratory conditions
- Field trials: We document effects under real cultivation conditions
- Biobanking: Professional storage of your isolates
- We have modern laboratory facilities with molecular biology methods, gas analytical equipment for activity and greenhouse gas measurements, climate chambers, mesocosms and access to field trial facilities.
NoN2O – Reducing nitrous oxide emissions
Danish Technological Institute is currently leading the NoN2O project, which develops biological solutions to reduce both nitrous oxide emissions and nitrogen losses from agriculture. The project focuses on developing biofertilizers that improve nitrogen use efficiency while reducing climate gas emissions.

Important to Know
Our work focuses on naturally occurring, non-hazardous microorganisms
Performance depends on conditions: Microbial products are based on living organisms. Environment, temperature, moisture and pH affect whether the product works – therefore we design products with an understanding of real-world conditions.
