Recycled Plastics - Treating plastic waste with plasma etching
Select Page
Approximately 30,000 tons of plastic are collected from consumers each year, but only 15 percent of the plastic is recycled, according to figures from 2018.
Many products contain several types of plastic, which are either welded or glued together and are very difficult to separate.
A large part of the packaging we use every day consists of several layers of plastic that are combined to protect the product. An example is cold cuts packaging made from plastic, where one layer is suitable for food contact, while another, thicker layer ensures the durability of the package. This type of packaging is tailored to ensure the durability of the individual product, as it combines the properties of different types of plastic. However, packaging made from several types of plastic is almost impossible to recycle.
Many packages are also coated with a printed color layer, which further complicates recycling.
How can the Danish Technological Institute help?
- Plasma treatment of waste samples and verification of the technology’s applicability
- Etching away thin oils, e.g., LDPE films from items
- Etching away printed colors on surface-treated items
