Treatment technology for industrial wastewater

Denmark In Danish

Get an impartial technology assessment that ensures you choose the right solution from the start—without being tied to specific suppliers.

Are you planning an investment in wastewater treatment? The Danish Technological Institute evaluates available treatment technologies and matches them to your specific wastewater and requirements. You receive a concrete, impartial recommendation—helping you avoid costly mistakes and select the solution that truly fits your situation.

What is a technology screening?

A technology screening is a systematic review of available treatment technologies, evaluated against your specific wastewater and requirements. The Danish Technological Institute assesses relevant technologies against a requirement specification based on your wastewater composition, limit values, and operational needs.

The result is a concrete recommendation for a treatment process—comprising one or more stages—accompanied by a transparent assessment of the extent to which each technology meets your requirements.

When is a technology screening relevant?

A technology screening is typically relevant when you:

  • Are considering investing in a new treatment plant or pre-treatment system
  • Have received new or stricter terms in your connection or discharge permit
  • Find that your existing treatment solution does not meet requirements
  • Pay surcharges to the utility company
  • Have large quantities of sludge or untreated wastewater that is currently sent for disposal
  • Want to reuse process water in production
  • Wish to validate a proposed solution from a supplier

What do you gain from this?

You receive a report containing a specific recommendation for a treatment process, based on a systematic evaluation of technologies against your requirements specification. The report can serve as:

  • A basis for decision-making for management or the board of directors
  • A foundation for dialogue with technology suppliers
  • Documentation for regulatory requirements and discharge permits
  • Risk mitigation in connection with investments

Additionally, the Danish Technological Institute can assist with supplier screening and obtaining price quotes—available as an optional service—providing you with a comprehensive overview of the options available on the market.

Independent advice

A technology vendor tests their own equipment and recommends their own solution. This is natural—but it is not necessarily the best solution for you, whether in terms of processes, space requirements, or economics.

The Danish Technological Institute is an independent, self-governing knowledge institution. We do not sell equipment, we do not receive commissions from vendors, and we are not tied to specific technologies. Our screening process is based solely on professional assessment and the requirements specification that you define in collaboration with us.

This means you receive a recommendation tailored to your needs—not to those of a vendor.

How a technology screening works:

1. Initial meeting — a review of your current facilities and processes, the composition of your wastewater, and your specific needs.

2. Requirements specification — we develop the requirements specification together with you, ensuring that limit values, operational requirements, and other relevant parameters are covered.

3. Mapping of potential solutions — a systematic exploration of available technologies on the market, including the collection of references from vendors.

4. Optional supplementary laboratory testing — verification of selected technologies using your wastewater at the Danish Technological Institute’s wastewater laboratory.

5. Report and recommendation — a comprehensive evaluation providing a concrete recommendation for a treatment process.

A typical process, excluding laboratory testing, takes 4–8 weeks, depending on the scope.

From screening to recycling — an example

An industrial company wanted to recycle up to 80% of its wastewater in its production processes. The Danish Technological Institute conducted a market survey and evaluated treatment technologies from several suppliers. In collaboration with the client, meetings were held with the technology suppliers to explore the pros and cons of each proposed solution. The process resulted in a concrete recommendation on how the company could treat and recycle its wastewater.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a technology screening for industrial wastewater? A technology screening is a systematic and impartial exploration of treatment technologies, evaluated against a company’s specific wastewater characteristics and requirements. The Danish Technological Institute evaluates relevant technologies and provides a concrete recommendation for a treatment process.

Why pay for a screening when a supplier offers free advice? A supplier provides advice regarding their own equipment. An impartial technology screening evaluates the full range of market options based on your specific needs—not based on a supplier’s product portfolio. A poor investment in the wrong treatment system can cost far more than an impartial technology assessment.

Can you guarantee that the recommended technology will work at full scale? A technology screening is an expert assessment based on data, requirements, and market knowledge. While it significantly reduces risk, final full-scale validation depends on operational conditions—which are best clarified through a subsequent pilot test or scale-up phase.

How long does a technology screening take? A typical process, excluding laboratory testing, takes 4–6 weeks. If laboratory testing is included, the timeframe depends on the scope of the work.
