European Test Schemes - Independent Testing for Market Access and Regulatory Compliance
For technical directors, quality managers, and compliance specialists, obtaining national and European market access requires more than statutory CE marking under the Ecodesign Directive. To commercialise heat pumps across European markets, manufacturers must document performance through recognised, third-party certification schemes that are deeply integrated into national building regulations, public subsidy programmes, and installer tender specifications.
Voluntary and market specific certification schemes operate as institutional risk-mitigation frameworks. They validate nominal capacity, seasonal efficiency (SCOP/SEER), and sound power levels (LwA) through rigorous, independent third-party laboratory verification. Without accredited test documentation mapped to these schemes, heating appliances face critical commercial barriers, such as ineligibility for consumer grant mechanisms, exclusion from national building energy performance databases, and heightened liability during statutory market surveillance audits.
Operating under ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, the Heat Pump Test Laboratory at Danish Technological Institute is an officially recognised testing facility across leading quality marks and regulatory conformity programmes in Europe. We deliver traceable, empirical datasets and compliant test reports that enable manufacturers and OEMs to navigate certification audits efficiently, de-risk procurement contracts, and achieve verified compliance across target jurisdictions.
Below is an overview of the primary European testing and certification schemes supported by our accredited laboratory facilities.
European Test Schemes
Our Heat Pump Test Laboratory is recognised by major European certification bodies to execute testing in accordance with international schemes, including the CEN Heat Pump KEYMARK, the EHPA Quality Label, NTA 8800, and the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Consequently, we deliver accredited testing aligned with the harmonised standards and regulatory requirements governing key European markets.

CEN Heat Pump KEYMARK
Danish Technological Institute is a certified test institute for the CEN Heat Pump KEYMARK. The scheme is owned by CEN, the European Committee for Standardization, and its secretariat is coordinated by EHPA.
The Heat Pump KEYMARK is an independent European certification mark guaranteeing that a heat pump meets stringent EU standards for quality, safety, and performance. For consumers, it is a symbol of trust and transparency, ensuring that advertised performance data - such as efficiency (SCOP/SEER) and sound levels - has been accurately verified by an impartial third party.
As a certified CEN Heat Pump KEYMARK test institute, our role is to perform the rigorous, standardized tests required for certification. In our accredited laboratory, we measure and validate thermodynamic and acoustic performance against the official reference standards: EN 14511 (heating/cooling capacity and COP/EER), EN 14825 (seasonal space heating efficiency and SCOP), EN 12102 (sound power levels), and EN 16147 (sanitary hot water tapping cycles). Our test reports provide the essential, objective evidence that manufacturers need to achieve KEYMARK certification.
With extensive experience, we offer testing according to all major EU standards, including ecodesign and energy labelling requirements.

The EHPA Quality Label
Beyond technical performance, the EHPA Quality Label provides consumers with total quality assurance. This European label certifies that a heat pump not only meets high efficiency standards but is also supported by strong manufacturer service and a spare parts guarantee.
Danish Technological Institute is your partner for achieving this certification. We conduct the essential, independent performance testing that serves as a cornerstone for a successful EHPA Quality Label application, verifying that your product meets the required standards.
The EHPA Quality Label is a comprehensive mark of trust for heat pumps across Europe. Managed by the European Heat Pump Association, it assures consumers of a product's high quality, backed by the manufacturer's commitment to service, documentation, and long-term spare parts availability. A key prerequisite for the label is verified performance data from an independent body.

NTA 8800
NTA 8800 is the mandatory method for determining the energy performance of buildings in the Netherlands, making compliance essential for market access. Danish Technological Institute is an officially certified laboratory for conducting the tests required by this standard.
Our recognition by the relevant Dutch authorities means that our test reports provide the valid, impartial evidence manufacturers need to obtain an official quality declaration. Our test reports supply the required empirical input parameters for Dutch energy performance calculations (BCRG database registration), ensuring your equipment is officially accepted by specifiers, EPC assessors, and contractors across all Dutch building projects.

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is the leading quality assurance standard for microgeneration technologies in the United Kingdom. For heat pump manufacturers who want to enter or expand within the UK market, MCS certification is essential, and it is often a mandatory requirement for products to qualify for UK government financial incentives and grant schemes.
MCS certification serves as a recognised mark of quality, safety, and reliability for British consumers and installers, proving that a heat pump adheres to strict technical specifications and performance criteria.
At Danish Technological Institute, we support manufacturers in navigating the pathway to MCS compliance. In our accredited laboratories, we perform the precise, third-party testing required to verify your heat pump's performance, including heating capacity, seasonal efficiency (SCOP), and acoustic/sound emissions, in accordance with the relevant EN standards (EN 14511, EN 14825, EN 12102) and the MCS 007 product certification standard accepted by the MCS scheme.
Our accredited test reports deliver the valid, impartial documentation necessary for your MCS product certification application, ensuring smooth and efficient market access to the United Kingdom.
