ESD measurement of the antistatic properties of floors
In Danish
Obtain documentation for the antistatic properties of your floor - and reduce the risk of sparks in ATEX areas, while simultaneously protecting sensitive equipment.
How can Danish Technological Institute help you?
Danish Technological Institute provides independent ESD measurement and consultancy on the antistatic properties of floorings:
- Measurement of the floor surface resistance according to EN 61340-4-1
- Documentation in the form of a detailed measurement report
- Advisory services regarding requirements for the antistatic properties of floorings in Guideline C.0.9 from the Danish Working Environment Authority (Arbejdstilsynet)
- Assessment against the Danish Working Environment Authority's guidelines on antistatic floors
- Assessment of relevance for areas with a risk of explosive atmospheres
Why is ESD measurement important?
Static electricity is generated in many ways; for instance, a person accumulates an electrostatic charge simply by walking across a non-conductive floor. If the flooring does not dissipate this charge, an electrostatic discharge can:
- Ignite explosive gas or dust atmospheres in ATEX zones
- Damage or destroy sensitive electronics and components
- Create safety hazards that are not visible during day-to-day operations
An ESD measurement from the Danish Technological Institute provides you with an objective, factual basis for assessing whether the floor complies with applicable requirements.
What does the measurement include?
The measurement is performed in accordance with the standard EN 61340-4-1, which specifies the test method for the electrostatic behaviour of floor coverings and installed floors.
Following the measurement, the Danish Technological Institute prepares a test report containing all relevant findings. The report can be used to:
- Document the electrical conductivity of the floor
- Support your ATEX documentation and risk assessment
The flooring must match the remaining antistatic equipment. Standards EN 345-1 (safety footwear) and EN 1149-1 (protective clothing) set out requirements for antistatic properties – but without the correct flooring, these protective measures lose their effectiveness.
ATEX testing of materials
In addition to ESD measurements of floors, the Danish Technological Institute conducts a range of tests related to the ATEX Directives 2014/34/EU and 1999/92/EC. These include antistatic testing of plastic materials, UV testing, climatic testing (including IP ratings), and dust sample analysis for explosion parameters such as Kst, Pmax, LEL, and MIE.
