More than 200 wood stove reports upgraded to a new European standard

More than 200 test reports for residential solid fuel burning appliances (primary roomheater as wood stoves) have been upgraded to the new European standard, EN 16510. Danish Technological Institute has helped manufacturers complete the process without requiring full retesting of their stoves, enabling them to continue selling their products to end consumers.

The deadline for updating existing test reports to comply with the new EN 16510 series of standards was 9th of November 2025. This applied to reports for products including wood stoves, inset appliances and pellet stoves. The EN 16510 series replace the previous product standards for the various product types covered.

The EN 16510 standards are divided into two parts: Part 1, EN 16510-1, sets out the common general requirements for measurement and test methods, while Part 2, EN 16510-2-X, sets out the specific requirements for each product type.

For manufacturers, the transition meant that existing documentation had to be reviewed and reassessed. Before such appliance can be placed on the market, the manufacturer must be able to demonstrate that it complies with the applicable requirements. This is done by having the product type-tested by an independent notified testing laboratory, such as Danish Technological Institute (Notified Body No. 1235).

Danish Technological Institute has been working on upgrading the reports for approximately 12 months, and only a small number did not fully comply with the new standard.

Forward-looking testing saves manufacturers costly retesting

Around a dozen stoves had to undergo a new safety test because they had previously been tested using an insufficient fuel load. However, no appliances required full retesting.

This was partly due to the thorough approach used in previous type-testing work. The new standard has been under development for the last 10–12 years. Through its active involvement in standardization work, Danish Technological Institute has been aware of most of the forthcoming requirements. It has therefore ensured that the majority of previous tests also complied with the future requirements for test methods.

For example, all appliances previously tested by Danish Technological Institute underwent at least three consecutive refueling cycles and, in several cases, as many as six or seven. The previous standards required only two individual refueling cycles and did not require them to be carried out consecutively.

Beeing aware of this and furthermore adopting the process at an early stage has provided a more robust basis for assessing the stoves and has reduced the need for further retesting.

In its type-testing work in general, and in connection with the many report upgrades in particular, Danish Technological Institute focuses not only on the wording of the standard, but also on its intent.

This means that assessments are not solely about meeting minimum requirements on paper. They must also provide an accurate picture of how the stoves perform in practice.

Continued EN 16510 conversion services

The work on the many reports has given the Danish Technological Institute extensive experience with the new series of standards. This experience can be applied when manufacturers need to update existing documentation or have new products tested in accordance with EN 16510.

Due to Brexit, the UK transition period for these upgrades has been postponed. British manufacturers are therefore only now beginning their EN 16510 transition, which must be completed by 25th of September 2027. Danish Technological Institute is therefore already assisting British manufacturers with their EN 16510 transition following the closure of KIWA UK, which had provided relevant testing services in the United Kingdom, earlier this summer.
