Test facilities
At the Danish Technological Institute, we offer advanced test facilities and laboratories that support the development, testing, and documentation of solutions within water technology – ranging from drinking water and wastewater to biogas, climate adaptation, and flow meters. Our facilities are flexible and staffed by specialists who will guide you safely from idea to solution.
Wastewater Laboratory
The Danish Technological Institute has many years of experience with the chemical and biotechnological aspects of wastewater treatment. We can therefore test any conceivable process on your water at a scale that offers the flexibility to make changes and adjustments.
We offer testing and optimization of:
- Membrane filtration (RO, UF, NF, MF)
- Biological treatment (MBBR, high-rate COD and nitrogen removal, detergents, micropollutants, antibiotics, and organic solvents)
- Ion exchange (heavy metals, chloride removal, etc.)
- Precipitation and coagulation/flocculation (COD, emulsified fats/oils, heavy metals)
- Filtration processes (belt filtration, filter presses, rotary filters, etc.)
- Phase separation (flotation, centrifugation, decanters, lamella separators, etc.)
- Electrodialysis (removal of ions, salts, and heavy metals)
- Biogas processes (water treatment combined with gas production; gas yield from waste/by-products)
Our test facilities operate at a scale that allows for the design and customization of the optimal solution, rather than simply testing a pre-packaged solution from a single supplier.
The Danish Technological Institute also tests and validates equipment from various manufacturers.
The Biogas Laboratory
We have well-equipped chemical and microbiological laboratories, as well as a team of microbiologists, chemists, and engineers, enabling the testing of ideas and technologies.
We offer:
- Conventional and advanced biomethane potential measurements
- Testing of substrates and process conditions on a semi-continuous scale
- Emission and odor measurements

Drinking Water Laboratory
Our extensive laboratory facilities are well-suited for proof-of-concept testing of solutions designed to ensure clean drinking water, across various scales.
We test purification solutions—including activated carbon, sand filters, and MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) systems—as well as disinfection technologies such as UV and ozone, which are used to inactivate bacteria and other microorganisms in water.
Our laboratories are equipped to support advanced microbiological analyses, including bacterial cultivation and the testing of small-scale water treatment solutions. We offer state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, including:
- Capabilities for sterile sample preparation and microbiological analysis within a genetic engineering laboratory.
- Display cooler: Specially equipped for testing treatment technologies in cold (non-freezing) temperatures.
- Multimode microplate reader: Capable of efficiently performing a wide range of assays.
- Real-time PCR instruments: Enabling precise and rapid detection of genetic material.
Our laboratories are approved for Class 1 genetic engineering work and Class 2 biological agents, ensuring full compliance with safety and quality standards. These facilities are essential for the development of innovative solutions for drinking water safety and GMO analysis.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get started with a testing process with you? It always begins with a no-obligation dialogue, during which we clarify your specific needs, challenges, or goals. Whether you wish to develop a new prototype, document the treatment efficiency of a product, or test the treatment of your specific wastewater, we will design a tailored testing process. We provide guidance on the most appropriate test setup, timeline, and cost, ensuring you have the best possible foundation for decision-making and documentation.
Can you assist with development, optimization, and independent documentation? Yes. Our test facilities and team of specialists cover the entire journey from concept to market. In the early stages, we can assist with proof-of-concept, concentration processes, and the testing of various process technologies at a laboratory scale. Later in the process, we can conduct long-term pilot-scale tests and provide independent, data-driven reports that you can use when engaging with investors, customers, or authorities to document equipment performance and compliance.
Which industries and types of projects do you typically work with? We work across the entire water sector. Our clients range from technology suppliers and equipment manufacturers (pumps, meters, filters) to utility companies, biogas plants, food and pharmaceutical companies, and consulting engineers. Projects vary from small, quick calibration tasks and analyses to multi-year development projects involving complex wastewater, climate resilience, or ultra-pure water for Power-to-X applications.
How long does a typical testing or calibration process take? The duration depends on the nature of the task. More extensive biological tests, BMP measurements on biogas, or pilot-scale testing of complex wastewater processes typically span 1–3 months to ensure stable operational data over time. You will always receive a clear timeline before we begin.
