Self-certification or need for a Notified Body for type examination according to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC or the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 – are you unsure?
At the Danish Technological Institute, we know the rules and are ready to assist you with type examination or – if you have a standalone machine – a unit verification pursuant to the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 that takes effect on 20 January 2027.
All machines must be CE marked in accordance with the Machinery Directive/Machinery Regulation before they can be marketed and put into service in the European market. The CE marking ensures the free movement of goods throughout the entire European Economic Area (EEA). By affixing the marking, the manufacturer or importer guarantees that the product complies with all legal requirements for the relevant directive.
As a manufacturer, you can, in most cases, 'self-certify' your machines without the involvement of a third party. You can issue a Declaration of Conformity for compliance with the directive. However, certain hazardous machines may be subject to specific conformity assessment procedures requiring an EU type examination by a Notified Body. Does it sound complicated, or are you unsure how your machine is categorised? We are familiar with the directives, the regulation, and the rules, and we are ready to advise you and assist with the type examination.
Here you can download our guide to CE marking under the Machinery Directive:
- Vehicle lifts
- Safety components with fully or partially self-developed behaviour
- Machines with embedded systems featuring fully or partially self-developed behaviour
- Lifts for persons or persons and goods
- Circular saws
- Planers with manual feed for woodworking
- Thicknessers for woodworking
- Band saws
- Combined machines for woodworking
- Milling machines with vertical spindle – with manual feed – for woodworking
- Presses – including press brakes – for cold working of metal
- Guards for removable mechanical power transmission devices
- Logic units for safety functions
Annex IV of the Machinery Directive and Annex I of the Machinery Regulation contain an exhaustive list of these machines.
How can the Danish Technological Institute help you?
Dancert (the certification body of the Danish Technological Institute) has been designated by the Danish authorities as a Notified Body (Notified Body 1073) for type examination of machines covered by Annex IV of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, as well as type examinations and unit verifications of machines covered by Annex I of the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230.
Dancert is appointed by the Danish Safety Technology Authority and accredited by DANAK.
The Danish Technological Institute has acted as a Notified Body under the Machinery Directive since 1995 (under Notified Body number 0396). Since 2023, this activity has been transferred to Dancert. As the same staff handle these tasks, they possess solid experience in type approvals of hazardous machinery.
When you choose Dancert to carry out the type examination of your MD Annex IV or MR Annex I machine, you ensure that communication will take place in Danish (or English, if you prefer). You will also receive a certificate stamped by Dancert and DANAK – a mark that stands for quality and is well-known throughout the EU.
The process for a type examination or a unit verification typically starts with an initial dialogue, where the product is presented and the practical procedure is agreed upon.
- The manufacturer completes and submits an application with name and address, as well as information about the production sites (the form can be requested from Dancert)
- Dancert prepares an offer for the task
- The manufacturer uploads the technical documentation to a secure cloud service
- Dancert reviews the technical documentation
- Dancert informs the manufacturer of the result of the review
- The time, place, and scope of testing and examination are agreed upon
- Dancert carries out an inspection of the type and, in cooperation with the manufacturer, conducts the necessary practical tests and examinations
- Dancert issues a type examination certificate or a certificate of unit verification
The technical documentation must as a minimum contain:
- A description of the machine
- Design and manufacturing drawings as well as sketches of components, sub-assemblies, electrical and hydraulic circuits, control/software, etc., along with any descriptions and explanations necessary to understand the aforementioned drawings and sketches
- Design calculations (strength calculations) and analyses, etc.
- Data sheets, certificates, etc. for the components used
- List of standards that have been fully or partially applied
- List of Essential Health and Safety Requirements that are not covered by the standards
- Risk assessment and documentation of compliance with the Machinery Directive and the applied standards, including a description of the chosen solutions
- When using C-standards, documentation that the machine falls within the scope of the standard, anything that does not, and a point-by-point review of the standard
- Results of any test reports
- User manual
- Draft Declaration of Conformity
