Militær drikkedunk i vand

INNOSWAMP

Through the INNOSWAMP project, the European Union supports the development of innovative water filtration technology to improve access to clean water during military operations.

Access to clean water is essential for military operations, especially in remote areas where water supplies and infrastructure may be limited. With funding from the European Defence Fund (EDF), INNOSWAMP brings together nine partners from seven European countries to develop a more efficient, flexible and sustainable water pre-filtration system.

The project combines advanced materials, including graphene oxide, with additive manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing. The aim is to develop reusable filters that can remove a wide range of contaminants while reducing energy consumption and maintenance requirements.

Unlike conventional filtration systems, INNOSWAMP's modular design will allow the technology to be adapted to different water sources and operational needs. This could make it easier for military personnel to access clean water in the field while reducing their dependence on external supplies and complex logistics.

Beyond improving water filtration, the project aims to strengthen the resilience and self-sufficiency of European armed forces. By bringing together expertise from across Europe, INNOSWAMP also supports innovation and collaboration within the European defence industry.

Expertise from across Europe

INNOSWAMP brings together nine partners from Denmark, France, Sweden, Greece, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. The consortium combines expertise in materials science, 3D printing, water treatment and defence technology.

Coordinated by the Danish Technological Institute, the project brings together research institutions, technology providers and industry partners to develop innovative water filtration solutions and explore their potential for future defence applications.

Focus areas

  • Developing a modular and reusable water pre-filtration system for military use
  • Combining 3D printing and graphene oxide to improve filtration performance
  • Reducing energy consumption, water waste and maintenance requirements
  • Adapting filtration technology to different water sources and operational environments
  • Strengthening European cooperation and innovation in defence technology

Facts about the project

INNOSWAMP (Innovative and Streamlined Water Prefiltration System for Military Personnel) is a research project funded by the European Union through the European Defence Fund (EDF).

The consortium consists of nine partners from seven European countries: Danish Technological Institute (DK - project coordinator), CenSec (DK), Center for Technology Transfers in Ceramics (FR), Chalmers University of Technology (SE), Stockholm Water Technology (SE), University of West Attica (GR), ROBOZE (IT), Eurecat (ES), and Stichting Duurzaam Brouwen (NL)

Project period: January 2026 - December 2028

Funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are, however, those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Defence Agency. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.
