Quality assurance of plastic products - Foreign bodies

When small particles, fibers, or similar need to be investigated, there are limitations on which analytical methods can be used.

The Danish Technological Institute has good experience identifying unknown particles using techniques such as infrared spectroscopy. Depending on the foreign body and context, FTIR is typically supplemented with elemental analysis and Raman microscopy, as the result of one type of microanalysis rarely gives a clear answer.

Identification is the first step towards eliminating the source of the foreign body, and by capturing its chemical fingerprint (FTIR), the substance type can be documented. Experience shows that foreign bodies often consist of several different chemical compounds, and therefore many of our larger customers have chosen to invest in a library of their possible contamination sources. This shortens analysis response time and makes it possible to exclude and pinpoint specific suspected sources.

What can the Danish Technological Institute help you with?

  • Identification of unknown material on the surface or embedded in the plastic
  • Advice on preventing contamination with foreign bodies
  • Microanalyses such as FTIR and Raman as well as spectral matching against commercial databases
  • Building a library of possible contamination sources
  • Independent input for decision-making regarding production stoppage
