Materials and process qualification for CCUS - Capture of CO2

Industrial CO2 capture is a technology aimed at reducing emissions of the greenhouse gas CO2 from various industrial processes.

CO2 capture can help achieve climate targets by preventing large amounts of CO2 from escaping into the atmosphere. CO2 capture can also create opportunities to utilize CO2 to produce green fuels, chemicals, and proteins.

CO2 capture typically takes place by directing flue gas from an industrial chimney through a liquid that binds or absorbs the CO2. The liquid is then heated so that it releases the CO2 into a closed container, from which it can be collected. The CO2 can then either be stored underground or used in other processes. In Denmark, there is great potential for storing CO2 in underground cavities — but also for using CO2 as a resource in power-to-X processes.

Within CO2 capture, the Danish Technological Institute can assist with the following services:

  • Conducting pilot trials with absorption and desorption of CO2 in materials and chemical substances
  • Determining reaction kinetics and gas compositions
  • Performing thermodynamic calculations for absorption and desorption of CO2
  • Conducting leak tests on plants and gas diffusion through plant materials
  • Conducting safety studies for CO2 capture plants
