Materials and process qualification for CCUS - Transport of CO2

CO2 transport is an important aspect in relation to climate change and sustainable energy.

CO2 transport refers to the process of moving CO2 from a place where it is emitted to another place where it can be stored or utilized. The purpose of CO2 transport is to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and thereby lessen the greenhouse effect.

There are various methods for transporting CO2, such as pipelines, ships, trains, or trucks. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages in terms of cost, safety, capacity, and environmental impact. Some of the factors that influence the choice of CO2 transport method are the distance between the source and the destination, the amount of CO2 to be transported, the availability of infrastructure, and legislation.

Risk of Leaks

CO2 is an aggressive substance that can cause corrosion or leaks in pipes, tanks, and other components. Therefore, the materials must be resistant to CO2 and have a long service life. By choosing the right materials, it is possible to achieve a safe and efficient CCUS infrastructure that can help combat climate change.

Within CO2 transport, the Danish Technological Institute can assist with the following services:

  • Capacity calculations of infrastructure such as pipelines for transporting CO2 gas, including linepack calculations
  • Calculations of pressure loss in pipeline transport systems for CO2. Estimation of phase transitions depending on pressure and temperature
  • Qualification of plastic and rubber materials for, for example, seals and transport pipes, including assessment of the service life of the materials
  • Qualification of metals for, for example, gas pipelines and valves, including testing of the materials' corrosion resistance to CO2
